At Root & Bloom Mental Health Services, we believe that healing doesn’t just happen in therapy sessions — it happens in community, in movement, and in moments of joy. That’s why we’re proud to sponsor an adult co-ed softball team this summer: The Shakas.
So, why “The Shakas”? The shaka sign — that familiar pinky-and-thumb wave — is more than just a casual greeting. Born in Hawaiian culture, it’s a universal symbol of connection, compassion, and the simple idea of “hang loose.” At its core, the shaka represents a way of being: relaxed, kind-hearted, open, and in tune with the flow of life. It’s a gesture that says:
“No worries. Be present. We’re all in this together.”
Mental Health and the Spirit of the Shaka
In a world that often glorifies hustle and constant productivity, the shaka reminds us to slow down and breathe. To extend grace — to others and ourselves. In mental health, this attitude can be transformative. It's easy to get caught up in anxious thinking, critical self-talk, or the pressure to always "do more." The shaka offers a counterbalance — a subtle but powerful invitation to let go of perfection and embrace progress, presence, and connection.
Why Team Sports Matter
The Shakas aren't just out there for wins (though we’ll take those too!). They're out there to connect, move, and belong — three pillars of mental health that research consistently supports:
Connection: Being part of a team fosters social bonds, camaraderie, and a shared sense of purpose. Isolation can worsen symptoms of anxiety and depression, while connection can be healing.
Movement: Regular physical activity improves mood, reduces stress, and boosts energy. Even just tossing a ball around releases endorphins and reduces cortisol levels.
Play: We don’t talk about play enough in adult life. Play reduces burnout, stimulates creativity, and reminds us that joy is a vital part of well-being.
Rooted in Care. Growing in Strength.
At Root & Bloom, we’re not just talking about wellness — we’re living it. Sponsoring The Shakas is a way for us to celebrate balance: the balance between hard work and play, between healing and thriving. It’s a reminder that mental health is built not just in quiet reflection but in laughter, movement, and community.
So if you see The Shakas out on the field — waving those pinky-thumb shakas with muddy knees and big smiles — know that it’s more than a game. It’s a movement. And there’s always room on the team for you.
